This dog was Brilliant!

Saffron spent the beginning of her life and the end of her life with me.  She was my Cory’s daughter and the only littermate of Robbie who came to me;  I brought them both home at 7 wks knowing I wanted a male but so torn between the two of them;  I almost took them both.  I knew Saffie was the conformation pick and with her new mom Pam Lukenbill she had a nice UKC conformation career, even going best puppy in match at her very first fun match.  Pam had a number of friends who showed her in various sports;  she finished her U-GRCH, her TD, her PT, and got half her double Qs and almost all of her points for her MACH with a different handler for each sport.  Unfortunately her agility handler was not as kind to her as we would have liked, and so she retired from agility prematurely and went back home to Pam.  When I lost her brother unexpectedly just a few months after her dad, Pam was kind enough to let her come to me at the age of 9 1/2 so I would have someone to show.  She went from zero retrieve to not only her CDX and trained through utility, but also served as my unofficial service dog.  We finished I believe 34 titles together in 3 years in obedience, rally, and nosework;  despite COVID, two types of cancer and two hospital stays, chem and radiation for me, and lymphoma and chemo for her, we managed to be the second sheltie ever to finish the AKC Scent Detective title;  and she even is on the bag of the Iams Senior bag of dog food. The two of us made it through that tough road to the detective title together while we both were on chemo;  I owed this little girl so much.  She saved my life.  Sadly I couldn’t save hers and I lost her the day before Halloween, 9 1/2 mos after we diagnosed her lymphoma.  I still miss my sassy, mouthy, little girl with the big heart every day, as well as her grandfather, dad, and brother.

Anything other than the default title 🙂

Overall I had a good experience with my mom;  she let me do all kinds of fun sports- no more sitting at home watching other dogs get to go places!  She definitely could be a little more generous with the treats and the meals- I would suggest switching to an all you can eat buffet format.  And I would have preferred if I was an only dog and that stupid cat and puppy hadn’t come along, but I guess I needed SOMEONE to be in charge of.  I did enjoy having a job to go to every day, and if I HAD to have a boss instead of be one all the time I guess she wasn’t a bad choice.

You CAN teach an old dog new tricks!

This was Saffron’s fourth session learning the dumbbell retrieve.  She was 9 1/2 years old and had zero retrieve skills, not even a play retrieve.  It took about three weeks from start to full length formal recall with front and finish;  she also learned to retrieve just about anything I asked like my shoes, the TV remote, my phone, or even my cane.  No compulsion or ear pinch needed, we just made it a fun game!
